From Athlete to First Responder

When Travis Bean, Jr. entered Center High School, he was focused on one thing: sports. Wrestling offered him a sense of purpose. But it was through PREP-KC's First Responders program, a partnership with Center School District and Metropolitan Community College-Blue River (MCC-BR), where he found a calling that extended beyond the mat.

"When I was presented with the First Responders program, it was this or stay at school," Travis shared. "Thankfully, I picked this. It turned out to be the best decision I've made."

Discovering Fire Service Through PREP-KC

"I didn't come in knowing anything about the fire service. Honestly, I learned a lot of it through the connections I made through the First Responders program," he recalled. Through the program, Travis earned nationally recognized credentials, including his Firefighter I certification, Emergency Medical Responder credential, and more—Market Value Assets that opened doors for him.

His community service through the program also shaped his leadership. "Just going around and helping people—shoveling sidewalks, going through nursing homes—it showed me where my heart was."

Mentorship and Lifelong Connections

While the technical skills and credentials were crucial, Travis emphasizes that a key mentor helped turn his career into a personal mission. "When I got to the First Responders program, that's when I met Captain Henry," he said. The fire service veteran introduced Travis to the real-world demands of the job and helped guide him to the Kansas City Fire Department. "Captain Henry is a big reason I even thought to apply. I wouldn't be a firefighter without him."

A Kansas City Firefighter at 19

Travis was one of the youngest recruits in his class. Starting as a firefighter at 19, he brings the grit of an athlete, the heart of a community servant, and the preparedness of someone who had already trained in the fundamentals before entering the academy.

"I did not think I'd be here already," Travis reflects humbly. "But between the First Responders program and Captain Henry, I've been set on a path that I'm proud of."
