Career Exploration Through PREP-KC Pathways

Scholar Besong, a 2025 graduate of Center High School, took full advantage of PREP-KC's college and career pathways. Through PREP-KC, she earned over 20 college credits, completed her CNA credential, and actively engaged with the Business & Finance Institute (BFI), HealthStart, and the Student Law Academy (SLA).

Scholar's career goals evolved as she engaged in real-world learning opportunities. Beginning her journey in BFI, "I realized I was a people person… and I want to be able to make an impact in people's lives." That realization prompted her to explore healthcare through PREP-KC's HealthStart program.

HealthStart opened her eyes to the wide range of careers that make up the healthcare ecosystem. "When you think of healthcare, you think of doctors and nurses, but it was nice seeing all the different careers through HealthStart," she said.

Discovering the Power of Law and Advocacy

She further broadened her ambitions by joining the Student Law Academy, where she linked her interests in healthcare with a stronger passion for justice. "SLA was that thing that lit the spark in me. I want to be that person to create and promote change."

The program introduced her to legal professionals and inspired her to consider healthcare policy and advocacy, particularly for underserved communities.

Earning Credentials and Real-World Experience

A daughter of two healthcare professionals, Scholar pursued her CNA credential to gain hands-on experience and strengthen her bedside manner. "I think a good career in healthcare--no matter what you're doing--starts with CNA or patient care tech. Your bedside manner gets really good," she explained.

Building Lasting Professional Connections

Scholar built strong, lasting relationships through PREP-KC. "All the speakers and our mentor were fantastic. I'm still connected with the mentor I met two years ago," she recalled.

Scholar is attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City, majoring in biology and minoring in public health. She hopes to blend medicine, advocacy, and leadership to make a meaningful impact. "No knowledge is wasted," she says. "I'll find a way to blend all my interests. That's just who I am!"
