Alumni Profile

Myuah Hamilton

Lincoln College Prep, Kansas City Public Schools Student Law Academy Class of 2019
"When I found the opportunity for the Student Law Academy, I jumped at it because it's very rare to find substantive legal work or any legal experiences as a high schooler, and being paid on top of that was just even more of an incentive."

A Head Start on a Legal Career

Student Law Academy (SLA) alumnus Myuah Hamilton described the program as pivotal in shaping her career trajectory. "I always knew that I wanted to be an attorney from a very early age," she shared. Through SLA, Hamilton gained hands-on experience, rotating through various law firms. "If [students] want to be well-connected, if they want to have the opportunity to see those hearings, go to court, and have legal experience, this program is a great start."

The Power of Networks

A first-generation law student, Myuah noted that "some of the people I met have proven to be life-changing," including Judge Susan Long, who supported her law school application with a letter of recommendation. SLA also introduced her to a network of influential legal professionals. "I just had an interview for a scholarship, and half the judges were mentors from Student Law Academy."

Building the Future of Kansas City's Legal Community

The Student Law Academy offers legal experience and builds a pipeline for diverse future attorneys in Kansas City. Myuah believes the Academy "literally has the potential to supply the next generation of diverse attorneys in Kansas City" by providing access and opportunities to students from underrepresented backgrounds. By fostering professional relationships, offering mentorship, and providing real-world legal exposure, the program helps students prepare for law school and their future careers.
