Discovering a Path in Law

Isabella, a 2025 graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, has always been interested in law. "I've always had a passion for helping people, and I was really good at debate and public speaking," she said. "The more that I experienced it, the more that I shadowed places where the law was being debated, and the more programs like this I participated in, the more I realized I really do like it."

That passion came to life through PREP-KC's Student Law Academy (SLA). Isabella discovered SLA through her school's Future Legal Professionals Club, where she served as president.

During SLA, Isabella immersed herself in conversations about constitutional rights, public defense, restorative justice, and the rule of law. "Some of the things that really stood out to me were the presentations and conversations," she reflected. "I specifically remember after that presentation on the rule of law, myself and about three other peers were just standing around…and we were all just talking about how we saw the rule of law or the lack of rule of law affecting our country or the world."

Connecting Activism and the Legal Profession

She credits the program with helping her see how activism and the legal profession can connect. "More than anything, Student Law Academy has strengthened my desire to advocate for my community. And I know that as long as I'm being myself authentically, I am on the right path."

Isabella also emphasized how SLA helped her build connections. "Being at SLA has given me a sense of community. I'm now connected with all of these intelligent, wonderful people who are my future colleagues. We've made connections with attorneys, judges, and professionals who are our future employers and mentors."

Looking Ahead at UMKC

This fall, Isabella begins her studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where she plans to double major in political science and psychology and minor in philosophy. She is excited to pursue opportunities like UMKC's 3+3 law program while joining clubs that allow her to balance passion, career, and fun.

"Student Law Academy seems like a catapult," she said. "Where you start, and then it launches you forward." Isabella's journey from high school to college represents the transformative power of early legal education and mentorship in shaping future advocates and legal professionals.
